Mushroom cultivation at home is easier than you think! This course covers low-tech, inexpensive ways to grow gourmet mushrooms year-round using things you probably already have around the house. Learn how mushrooms are cloned, how ‘spawn’ is made, how substrate is prepared and how and when to harvest your mushrooms. This course also includes a take-home grow kit to get you going growin’!
Kokedama are small houseplants growing in a moss covered ball. This thousand-year-old Japanese tradition is very trendy right now. They can sit on decorative trays, or hang from a hook, and are then called “string gardens”. Although pricey in florist shops, you can make one yourself for just a fraction of that cost, and once you learn how, you can make more. Plant, materials and simple container ideas will be provided.
There is a lab fee of $12 payable to the instructor at the class.
Winnipeg is home to approximately eight million trees and chances are a few of those are rooted right in your own back yard. This course pertains to all tree species growing in Winnipeg and covers planting, pruning and general tree care that every homeowner can enjoy doing themselves. Learn how to deal with pests and diseases such as Dutch Elm disease and Ash Borer, some basic tree biology and proper tools and equipment to use.
This intensive course will give you the confidence and materials necessary to start up your own beekeeping operation on a small scale. Learn the important role bees play in our environment and develop the tools and knowledge to maintain a healthy and clean hive. You will build your own hive to take home and have an opportunity to work with live bees in the field. Handling bees in not dangerous – it is an enjoyable activity that can be therapeutic in many ways. The honey you get from the tireless workers is a tasty by-product!

Learn how to raise butterflies from egg to adult. Gain the confidence to start your own vivarium and see firsthand the metamorphosis from caterpillar to chrysalis to adult butterfly. This is a wonderful activity to share with children of all ages, especially the ceremony of releasing the adults near your butterfly garden. You will leave the course with a few live caterpillars of Painted Lady butterflies and adequate food and shelter including perches for the chrysalis to hang onto while it changes its wardrobe. The course is designed to give you the information necessary to start your own rearing of butterflies of all types including the impressive Monarch Butterflies.
A supply fee of $29 is included in the cost of the course. The supply package includes 3 caterpillars per student, 1 terrarium, food and apparatus.
