Description:
This program is designed to let you study part-time, weeknights and weekends. If you are currently working during the day, or at home caring for others, this might be the perfect fit for you. This program provides the training to manage computers, servers and other devices, and to network them effectively and efficiently. Our Information Systems program combines theory with hands-on projects and was developed based on needs identified in the industry. We utilize the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum to prepare students for exciting careers in Information Technology, providing access to expert educational IT content and to a rich learning experience through online media. Engaging activities include animated simulations, videos, and interactive quizzes, along with valuable hands-on lab exercises for real world experience. We’ve gone even further by partnering with CompTIA and Microsoft’s Academic Alliance to ensure that our students are kept up to date with the latest in technology.
Prerequisites and Beneficial Skills
- High school diploma or GED
- Basic keyboarding skills and basic knowledge of computer operating systems are recommended.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Good problem-solving skills.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the courses you will receive a Computer Repair and Networking Certificate from the Louis Riel School Division, Continuing Education Department.
Upon completion of this certificate, students may choose to take additional exams to earn the following certificates:
- CompTIA A+ Computer Repair Technician
- CompTIA Net+ Network Technician
- Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT)

Course 1: Hardware and Software Essentials

This course covers the fundamentals of computer hardware and software, and the responsibilities of an IT professional. It is designed for students who want to pursue careers in ICT and to gain practical knowledge of how a computer works. Students who complete this course will be able to describe the internal components of a computer, assemble a computer system, install an operating system, and troubleshoot using system tools and diagnostic software. Students will also be able to connect to the Internet and share resources in a networked environment. Additional topics include mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones and client-side virtualization. This course contains the learning outcomes found in IT Essentials from the Cisco Networking Academy. This curriculum helps students prepare for the CompTIA A+ certification exams.
Course 2: Windows Desktop Operating System

This course covers the installation, deployment, and troubleshooting of the current Microsoft Desktop Operating system. The hands-on approach will prepare students to face the real life challenges of a Microsoft desktop technician and assist students in preparing for the Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification exams. The focus of this course is on learning the fundamentals of networking. Students will learn both the practical and conceptual skills that build the foundation for understanding basic networking.
Course 2: Advanced Networking Technologies

This course is a continuation of the Networking Technologies course. Students will: • continue to examine the OSI and TCP/IP layers in detail to understand their functions and services • understand the various network devices and network addressing schemes • discover the types of media used to carry data across the network. By the end of this course, students will be able to build simple LANs, perform basic configurations for routers and switches, and implement IP addressing schemes. This course includes the specific outcomes from the second half of Cisco Level 1 Introduction to Networks.
Course 3: Cyber Security Essentials

Learn programming principles by using the web’s hottest programming language, JavaScript, and write your own scripts to create interactive pages. Add complexity to your website with databases and learn to use WordPress for a content management system. Course 2: Special Projects and Career Development

Course 1: Keyboarding Skill Development and Correspondence

This course’s main objective is to develop proficient keyboarding skills, including correct touch technique, accuracy and speed. The goal is to be able to average 40 words per minute as measured in five-minute timings. You will also develop your writing skills by learning grammar, punctuation, writing and proofreading skills. Emphasis is placed on written communication by email and letters and learning features of Microsoft Outlook and Word.
If you already type at a speed of 40 words per minute or more, then this course will be for you to challenge yourself to improve on your previously acquired technique and speed. Knowing how to type quickly can save hours of valuable work time and increase your productivity. It is an essential skill in today’s offices. The faster you can demonstrate your typing speed, the more chances for employment success and advancement.
Course 2: Word Processing
October 20 – November 22, 2020 / Hours 48 / Tuesday and Thursday Evenings and select Sundays
Microsoft Word is used worldwide to create business documents. Knowledge in this application is absolutely essential to any administrative assistant. This course will make you highly proficient in using the software. You will be able to create letters, memos, reports, and tables. You will be able to use Word for desktop publishing, creating brochures, newsletters, calendars, cards, invitations and more.
Course 3: Career Development
November 24 – December 15 / Hours 23 Tuesday and Thursday Evenings and select Sundays
This module is expressly designed to provide you with the tools and strategies to start your job search. You will learn to assess your strengths and weaknesses and to do a skills inventory. You will self assess your skills, personality and goals.
You will learn about the job market and where to “look” for a job. You will produce a complete resume and learn to create a cover letter, thank you and follow up letters. Students will define and compare different compensation and benefit packages. Basic provincial employment legislation will be explored.
You will hone your interview skills and feel confident that you are prepared for your job search. The end goal is that you ultimately get a job as an Administrative Assistant in a field that interests you.
Work Practicum (optional)
To be scheduled upon completion of the first 6 courses / Hours 120
The work practicum is optional. This practicum enables students to gain experience in an office setting. You will apply, develop and demonstrate your knowledge and skills in an office environment in a three-week period.
If students choose not to do the practicum, this will not affect their marks or their ability to pass and receive their certificate. These students will be given a special project to complete in lieu of the practicum.
The total length of the Certificate Program is 430 hours and will run from January 7/20 to December 15/20 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 – 9:30 p.m. and select Sundays from 1:30 – 5:30 p.m. The complete Certificate program will be delivered in 3 semesters within the 2020 school year. The Certificate Program offers an optional work experience component to provide you with practical skills and a reference to launch your career.

This course will introduce you to accounting concepts and procedures. You will learn about debits and credits and how to analyze and record business transactions. You will study basic accounting principles involved in the operation of a business through a complete cycle, using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). You examine petty cash and cash control, banking procedures, as well as payroll concepts and procedures. You will be able to perform General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll and inventory transactions.
You will be able to setup and interact with different ledgers using Sage 50 computerized accounting software. In using this software you will develop an understanding of how to enter transactions into the general ledger, prepare and adjust entries and print out financial statements.
Course 2: Computer Applications – Spreadsheets and Databases
February 11 – March 19, 2020 / 48 hours / Tuesday and Thursday Evenings and select Sundays
Excel is the most popular spreadsheet software in the world. This is a “hands-on” computer course which will teach you to be highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel. Learn to design and create complex spreadsheets using formulas and built in functions to solve business problems. You will be able to solve mathematical problems. Learn to present data in graphic chart format.
Using Microsoft Access you will become familiar with and learn the basics of creating a database. You will learn to enter data and sort and filter information and to create tables, queries and reports.

Office Procedures covers the typical skills required of Administrative Assistants in the day to day management of an office. Students will learn courteous and efficient telephone and reception techniques. You will learn to greet and deal with clients and book appointments. You will study filing techniques for both paper and electronic filing and records management, mail handling duties and office supply ordering and inventory. Travel planning for the executive is covered.
Course 2: Communication and Office Skills
May 12 – June 23, 2020 / 48 hours / Tuesday and Thursday Evenings and select Sundays
The focus of this course is to develop positive, professional and effective communications skills necessary for employment in a business environment. Techniques will be presented to improve your ability in oral communications among peers, clients and managers. You will have skills to resolve interpersonal or work assignment conflicts. You will develop knowledge and skills related to your image, confidentiality, and accountability. You will learn to make and deliver a presentation using presentation software, PowerPoint.
You will use Outlook to set up and manage meetings and know how to take and record minutes to support your boss and also how to participate as a member in meetings. You will develop knowledge for planning events or conferences.
Techniques will be presented to improve a student’s ability to meet deadlines and manage time and to prioritize workloads.
